Is it possible to connect the IDE and SATA hard disk to the same system?

will have a 40GB IDE hard about diving 5 years, I recently changed my motherboard (Gigabyte G31M-ES2L), which takes both IDE and SATA slots. Now I plan to buy a disk of 250 GB SATA. Is it possible to connect both the player in the same board as no master slave architecture?

Yes it is possible to run both IDE and SATA. However, what you want to do is you want to do either of your primary hard drive and keep the other hard drive (s) off-line until you have installed Windows. Windows will natively install an IDE drive. This is because FDI was the de facto standard for 20. Now, SATA has taken over. What I mean is, Windows can become confused if you have both types of readers connnected to the computer when you install Windows. Especially if you have a SATA drive you want to make the primary drive and an old secondary IDE drive. This can run Windows for a loop. The other problem is that you must load the drivers for SATA uncompressed during installation of Windows for Windows to detect a SATA drive. Here's what you want to to avoid problems: 1). A new CD from the motherboard, the location of the SATA drivers. On the ASUS motherboard, you can do in DOS at startup having the CD as primary boot device, have the motherboard CD in the drive at startup and have a formatted disk foppy available. Asus will launch the decompression utiity SATA and give you a menu choice to write the uncompressed drivers on a floppy disk (s). Since you have a CD Gigabyte, check your mobo manual for how to locate and extract the SATA drivers from the CD and see if they offer a decompression utility in DOS. Either way, SATA drivers unpack to a temporary directory on your hard drive. Then, if you do not have a floppy disk, write the uncompressed drivers on a CD (using a data CD as the disc type). You now have a driver CD with SATA drivers uncompressed. Initially, only have Disk SATA (plugged into the SATA1 port on the motherboard) connected to the electrical connector from the PSU. You can have the old IDE drive in place with tape IDE connected, just do NOT connect the molex power connector for the moment. Therefore, Windows Installer does not detect the IDE drive during installation. Proceed to start the Windows Installer. Hold the F6 at the beginning to let Windows installer know that you want to load proprietary drivers. Windows loads generic drivers actions and then asks for proprietary drivers (both XP and Vista do). Upon request, take your disk Windows disk and insert your SATA driver CD into the drive and load all the drivers from the CD into Windows Setup. Once the pilot are loaded, put your Windows CD back into the CD or DVD. Proceed as normal with the installation of Windows and … detects your unit SATA disk, you can then format the partition and install Windows. Once Windows is installed on the SATA drive and is up and running, then shut down the computer down. Connect the molex connector on the IDE drive configured as the primary IDE port (Master device). Boot back up and Windows will detect the IDE drive and you will be up and running with two types of readers. If you have a SATA CD / DVD drive, you connect to the SATA2 motherboard, no jumpers. If you have an IDE CD / DVD player, set the disk with the jumper on the back to the slave on the IDE port. They outta 'er.
